The controls, in three steps

You move the boat.

1

Begin at a comfortable volume.

Choose a sound, word, or phrase. In Gentle starts, begin quietly and gradually bring the volume up toward the target. Try a vowel such as “Ah” first. Keep your voice comfortable; do not force or extend a breath.

2

Use volume to find the channel.

Below the target, the boat moves left. Above it, the boat moves right. Inside it, the boat settles between the buoys. The meter shows which way to adjust. Pitch does not steer, and words are not checked.

3

Light a buoy. Pause. Begin again.

In Gentle starts, a measured gradual rise opens the crossing toward the next buoy. Then collect the selected time inside the target range. In Steady sailing, time in range is enough. Your accumulated progress stays when you stop speaking. No countdown runs against you.

This game measures a microphone amplitude envelope, not airflow, vocal-fold behavior, physical effort, or stuttering. A “gradual rise” means that the measured volume took 0.14–1.20 seconds to rise from 20% to 80% of the selected target without a large reversal. These are game design assumptions, not validated clinical thresholds. Consonants, room noise, microphone position, and device processing can change the readings. Other sounds can also move the boat. Use a quiet room and a consistent microphone position.

Easy onset is a gradual beginning of voicing, not simply a low volume. This game offers a limited visual practice aid, not confirmation that easy onset was performed. ASHA: Stuttering, Cluttering, and Fluency

Fit the game to your voice

Set comfortable level.

First, leave a short quiet moment so the game can measure the room. Then say your chosen sound or phrase at a normal, comfortable volume.

The microphone stays off until you begin.

This adjusts Microphone sensitivity to your comfortable sample. Target stays unchanged; the reading is a game scale, not decibels. Keep the same microphone position while playing. You can repeat this setup whenever your device or room changes.
